About 5 miles from my home is Redgate animal sanctuary (the gate at the entrance is red…). It is unfortunately closed to the public at the moment due to some trendy virus (COVID-19, have you heard?) but they’ve not stopped working, oh no! In fact, lovely Donna, one of these babies’ onsite guardian says ‘this is a 24h job, you have to love what you do’. I had the privilege to come for a quick visit and chat and had a little cuddle with some of them (the animals, off course!) – Ivy and Bramble, goats, are super friendly! I loved that all babies have names and sometimes they follow a theme, at the moment they are naming kittens and cats based on Disney characters – how cute is that?
The Sanctuary has been open for over 30 years and their staff and volunteers are very passionate about what they do. They have different animals onsite, from goats, sheep, pigs, chickens, ducks, turkeys, to cats, birds and rabbits… oh, even a turtle sometimes. Some of these babies get to be re-homed (they actually have a waiting list and in 2019 they re-homed over 400 animals!) – others will stay for as long as they will live for (they don’t put animals to sleep…). The number of animals vary but usually is higher in autumn and winter due to mating season. They shelter animals from various sources: rescue centres, unwanted pets, kittens found on the streets… The livestock comes from different rescue routes too.
How can people help and contribute? There are lots of different ways: volunteering, dropping fresh vegetable scraps and cat food (and cleaning products), through shopping on amazon, by becoming a friend of the sanctuary, by sponsoring one of the permanent residents, by donating and buying things from their charity shops (currently 3 of them around Leicester) or bank transfer. They also have fundraising events from time to time, but again, currently pending virus eradication.
Schools, including Leicester College visit the Sanctuary very often, including their disable students. Donna told me that they had a student with some anger issues, and visiting the Sanctuary and interacting with the animals helped him a lot and he’s now much better and studying at University level- how heart-warming is this?

A cerca de 8km de minha casa existe um santuário de animais chamado Redgate (o portão de entrada é vermelho). Infelizmente de momento encontra-se fechado ao público devido a um vírus qualquer da moda (COVID-19, já ouviu falar?). Porém, eles não pararam de trabalhar! Donna, uma senhora super simpática que lá trabalha, disse-me ‘isto é trabalho de 24h, tem que haver amor para o fazer’. Tive o privilégio de dar lá um pulinho rápido, ter dois dedos de conversa com a Donna e dar alguns miminhos (aos animais, claro!) – as cabrinhas Ivy e Bramble são super simpáticas! Adorei o fato de que todos os animais têm nomes e às vezes seguem um tema, de momento estão a dar nomes baseados em personagens da Disney aos gatinhos – não é fofo?
O Santuário está aberto há mais de 30 anos e a equipa e voluntários que lá trabalham são muito dedicados. Têm diferentes tipos animais, desde cabras, ovelhas, porcos, galinhas, patos, perus, a gatos, pássaros e coelhos … ah, até uma tartaruga às vezes. Alguns destes animais podem ser realojados (têm uma lista de espera e em 2019 eles realojaram mais de 400 animais!) – outros são residents permanentes (eles não abatem animais…). O número varia, mas geralmente têm mais no outono e no inverno devido à época de acasalamento. Os animais são acolhidos de várias origens: centros de resgate, animais de estimação indesejados, gatinhos encontrados nas ruas … O gado também vem através de diferentes formas de resgate.
Como podemos ajudar e contribuir? Existem muitas maneiras diferentes: voluntariado, dando restos de vegetais frescos e ração para gato (e também produtos de limpeza), fazendo compras na amazon, tornando-se ‘amigo’ do santuário, patrocinando um dos animais residentes, doando e comprando coisas das lojas de caridade (atualmente têm 3 em Leicester) ou contribuindo através de transferência bancária. Também organisam eventos para angareação de fundos de vez em quando, mas… atualmente o sacana do virus deixou os planos em banho-maria.
Escolas, incluindo o Leicester College, visitam o Santuário com frequência,especialmente os alunos com deficiêcias. A Donna contou-me que tiveram um aluno com sérios problemas de ansiedade mas as visitas ao Santuário e a interação com os animais ajudou-o muito e agora ele está muito melhor e a estudar na Universidade- que bonito!
Espero que isto vos inspire um bocadinho. A mim inspira muito e é por isso que decidi doar 10% das receitas do meu blog (dinheiros, não as comidas J ) para o Santuário até o final do ano. Por favor, ajudem também (a eles e a mim 🙂 )!
